Ah, the River Wye – beautiful, unpredictable, and always keeping us on our toes. Once again, it has reminded us who’s really in charge by deciding to redecorate our gym. After the heavy snow melt, the river swelled, spilled its banks, and promptly moved into our ground floor like it owned the place. Thankfully, this time we were ready.
As the waters rose, the Monmouth Rowing Club team sprang into action. The gym was cleared well in advance, leaving nothing for the flood to claim except a generous layer of Wye’s finest mud. And when the waters receded as quickly as they came, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work restoring our second home.
A huge shoutout goes to the true champions of this cleanup regatta:
- Mike B**, our commander-in-chief with the mop.
- Colin C** and Colin L, proving two Colins are better than one.
- Jon M, who we suspect may have a secret life as a professional vacuumer.
- David L, who took on the mud like he was racing at Henley.
- Grant M, the mud whisperer (or was it mud wrestler?).
- Darren C, who managed to keep the humor afloat even in the muck.
- Shelagh S and Helen T, showing the Wye who’s boss.
- And Liz L, who we’re convinced can wield a mop like a blade.
The gym is now sparkling clean and ready to welcome us back for circuits, ergs, and perhaps the odd muddy footprint or two we missed. It’s moments like these that remind us why Monmouth Rowing Club is more than just a sports club – it’s a community, a team, and, occasionally, a mud removal task force.
So here’s to the next chapter in the life of Monmouth Rowing Club – where the river might flood, but the spirit never sinks. See you all on the water (or the erg)!
**PS:** If anyone’s in the market for a truly unique workout, we highly recommend "flood recovery circuits." It’s the full-body experience you never knew you needed!
