Worcester Head 2023

With just a few weeks until the Putney Eights races, Worcester Head once again proved to be a great training ground as well as providing four strong wins and race practice.

After an early start, Monmouth Rowing Club saw 16 men & 14 women from the Performance Squads travel to Worcester on Sat 11 Feb 2023 to compete in the Worcester RC main head, a race of 6km down the River Severn. Conditions were good throughout the day so racing was enjoyable for all crews competing.

In Div 1 the Op8 (Cox Hannah LD, Matt W, Evan WW, Tim M , Simon L, Oli P, Tom B, Sam B, Alex B) were the first crew to race. They were in a competitive category & finished in 5th place in time of 19.51.

In the Women's Master E Class WMasE8+ ( Cox Gail A, Louise A, Liz L, Kate H, Julia C , Mary M, Gabby M, Shelagh S, Bonita B) took on host club Worcester and beat them convincingly in 23.18. Well done to Bonita winning her first Head 'pot', fantastic effort!

The last MRC crew to race in the morning was the MasE4- (Lenny C, Nick H, Jonathan F, James A) who also won their category 21.52 beating Warwick RC.

Following a short lunch break, more crews took to water for Div 2. The Op4- (Matt W

Evan WW, Sam M, Tom B) started the afternoon racing by beating Bridgnorth in a time of 20.45.

The W8+ ( Cox Mary M, Sue S, Bonita B, Dawn B, Julia C, Jan W, Gail A, Frances L, Amanda S) had some very strong & young opposition to contend with but battled to the end finishing 7th in 25.30.

MasE8+ (Cox Hannah LD, Lenny C, Nick H, Jonathan F, Simon L, Colin L, Alex M, T Harding, James A) had a great race in a completely new line up. Winning their category they saw off their 3 opponents and their time of 20.15 made them the 2nd fastest crew of the division - an excellent performance. This was Toby's first race for the Performance squad & his first ever head race win. Congratulations!

The final crew to race was the WF4- (Louise A, Gabby M, Kate H, Liz L)who had no opposition so raced time only, finishing in time of 24.37.

This proved once again to be a great club day; all members working together to get boats rigged/derigged, equipment sorted & assisting with getting boats to & from the river etc. Thanks to Hannah, Gail and Mary for coxing, James & Louise for towing & Tim for coaching input.

The next event entered is Women's Head 4th March.
