Monmouth Rowing Club's Winter Head Race: Sun, Speed, and Storm-Defying Spirit!
What a day! After the chaos of Storm Bert just the weekend before, Monmouth Rowing Club was determined not to let a little bit of wet weather dampen the excitement for our Winter Head Race. The storm may have tried its best to throw a spanner in the works, but thanks to the hard work and determination of our club members, we were all set for an unforgettable event!
Despite the gloomy forecasts and gusty winds from Bert’s tantrum, the sun made a timely appearance on race day, and we were blessed with perfect conditions for a fast and fun course. The racing was fast, the skies cleared up, and suddenly, it was clear we were in for something special.
The 2km event was raced over two divisions, with more than 150 boats lining up to take on the challenge. We had rowers from far and wide, with clubs like the well-known Auriol Kensington from London joining us, bringing a fantastic buzz to the day. From seasoned athletes to beginners taking their first steps into competitive rowing, the energy was contagious, and it was amazing to see so many people passionate about the sport.
Division One
In Division 1 Hereford Cathedral School continued their winter dominance this season with their Junior J164x taking the fastest time of the morning in 6m 29s. Results for Div 1 are on webscorer

The spirit of Monmouth Rowing Club shone brightly as our volunteers, coaches, and members worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From setting up the course to ensuring smooth registration and providing support on the riverbank, it truly was a team effort. It’s no easy feat pulling off a race of this scale, especially with the last-minute storm drama, but everyone pulled together to make it happen seamlessly.
In the end, it wasn’t just about the results — though we’re sure the winners had plenty to smile about. It was about the joy of the sport, the friendships forged on the water, and the shared love of a good challenge. A big thank you to all the umpires, clubs who traveled to join us and to our fantastic Monmouth team for making it all happen.
Here’s to another successful Winter Head Race — and if another storm decides to show up next year, we know we’ll handle it with the same spirit and teamwork that makes Monmouth Rowing Club so special!
