Double Gloucester Wins

There’s something special about winter rowing: the crisp air, the still waters, and the persistent drive to be faster and stronger. For Monmouth Rowing Club , this year's winter head race season kicked off at Gloucester with double wins on a day marked with unusually good weather; sunshine, no wind and beautifully flat water.

With over two hundred crews competing over the 5km course, Monmouth won both the races they entered, the Men Masters E Coxed Four and the Women Masters C/E/F Eight.

First off were the Mens Coxed Four (Ian, Nick, Tim, Alex and cox Ewart). This was the first outing for this combination and despite the usual hazards of narrow bridges and reeds, they managed to rate a steady 32 spm down the course and won comfortably. It was Ewart's first win as a Cox and Alex first Head win rowing on bow side.

The Women's Eight (Louise A, Liz, Kate H, Sue, Paula, Maggie, Lou T, Sarah cox Bonita) followed shortly down the course. Up against eights from Bewdley and Stratford-upon-Avon, they had a great race, winning on both raw time and handicap.

Once again thanks to Maggie for towing and Tim Male for preparing all the crews.
